1) Welcome to Monarch Watch's Update List!

You are receiving this email because you have provided Monarch Watch with your email address at some point and expressed interest in receiving updates from us. If you do not wish to receive these periodic (probably monthly) email updates or feel that you were subscribed in error, please see the unsubscribe information at the end of this message.

If you know someone that you think might be interested in receiving these email updates from Monarch Watch with monarch news, special announcements, tips on raising monarchs in your classroom, monarch tagging information and a whole lot more, please send them on over to

http://www.MonarchWatch.org/signup

to join our new Monarch-Watch-Update email list - it's easy!

Monarch Watch (http://www.MonarchWatch.org) is a not-for-profit educational outreach program based at the University of Kansas. We run a Monarch tagging program and offer Monarch Rearing Kits, Monarch Tagging Kits, and other promotional/educational materials that allow you to actively experience the Monarch life cycle and its spectacular fall migration.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us anytime!

2) Email Update Archive

Have you somehow missed (or misplaced ;-) an update? Now you can find all of the updates archived online at

http://www.MonarchWatch.org/update

==========================================

3) Late Summer Monarchs

Please report all sightings of monarchs seen in August and mid September at latitudes of 38 degrees or less to Monarch Watch. A recent paper by Bill Calvert, personal observations, and numerous previous reports to Dplex (http://www.MonarchWatch.org/dplex) suggest that reproductive monarchs begin moving south in early August - effectively recolonizing areas devoid of monarchs from mid May to late summer. We need locations and dates of any sightings below 38 degrees (areas south of a "line" from mid KS east to the coast). These data will be used to test a new theory concerning the migration.

4) 2001 Tagging Kits

We will begin shipping the 2001 Tagging Kits on August 1st. Remember, we ran out of tags last year so if you haven't ordered your tags yet, head on over to

http://www.MonarchWatch.org/order

and get them today!

5) New Promotional Items via CafePress!

As we mentioned in the last update, thanks to an online service called CafePress we are able to offer lots of promotional items with several different designs. In addition to sweatshirts, t-shirts, mugs, and mousepads we will now be able to offer tank tops, boxers, baseball caps, bucket hats and tote bags with the designs *you* suggest.

Visit our "store" (link below) to purchase these items and stay tuned for new products and more designs coming soon.

Also, if you have any ideas for these new products (or want to create your own design), please let us know and we will see what we can do :-)

Visit http://www.MonarchWatch.org/cafepress for complete details.

6) Monarch Watch Funding

Monarch Watch continues to be financially challenged. We are just scraping by and are still searching for corporate or foundation support. Due to a shortfall in income we are attempting to enlarge our base of support through collaborative arrangements with other organizations. Any leads for potential sources of funding you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

7) Dana Leaving Monarch Watch

If you have had any contact with Monarch Watch over the last 4 years, odds are you know who Dana is (or at least recognize the name ;-). This is Dana's final week at Monarch Watch as she will be attending her first semester of Veterinary School this fall. Dana's "formal" farewell will appear in the 2000 Season Summary (http://www.MonarchWatch.org/order/seasum.htm) which will be published later this summer. We'll all miss Dana but wish her well in her studies.

==========================================

8) Home Earth Partnership

For some time our web visitors have asked for a "true" online ordering system for Monarch Watch promotional and educational items. We are prohibited from doing this ourselves, but we think we may have found an alternative. Through our partnership with Home Earth, we will be able to open an online storefront that will contain lots of Monarch Watch items and also give "Monarch Watchers" access to other nature-related items. We don't have all of the details yet, but we hope to get things up and running this fall - we'll keep you posted!

==========================================

9) We Still Need Your Feedback!

In the last update we asked to hear what you think about the current site and the changes you would like to see made. We've received lots of great feedback but we'd like to hear from more of you!

Please take 5 minutes to fill out our short survey at

http://www.MonarchWatch.org/sitesurvey/

or send an email message with your feedback and/or suggestions to our webmaster at

jlovett@ku.edu

Thanks again!

10) 2000 Season Summary

We are wrapping up the Season Summary and expect it to arrive in your mailboxes around the 1st of September. The Season Summary is later this year because Dr. Taylor (who authors most of the publication) was very busy organizing the Monarch Population Dynamics Meeting that occurred earlier this summer (see the June 6th Update for details).
