Where will my butterfly go?

Postby tartandtiny » Wed Sep 02, 2009 1:48 pm

I am in central Connecticut -- Latitude 41 - I looked at the Monarch Watch map regarding migration and it looks like my butterfly's will head to Florida.

Does that sound right? Or can they also head toward Mexico.

Regarding Tagging. What are the odds that one of my 15 will be sighted?

They can go down along the coast and then across the gulf. They usually don't actually stay in florida.

And as for odds... I raised 400 last year with 4 actually making it to Mexico.

There are resident Monarchs in Florida. Not all of them take the coastal route, some stay in Florida, some winter over in remote places in Florida, others go down and cross the gulf into Cuba. Some even hop islands in the Carribean.

Where they will go depends alot on the date of tagging. If tagged in mid-late August or the first
week of September, some will end up at the overwintering sites in the mountains of central Mexico, while others should end up in the coastal areas of the southeastern States including Florida and some should become reproductive there in Nov.

If tagged in late Sept or early October, most should end up in the coastal areas of the southeastern States including Florida and some should become reproductive there in Nov. A few could even
end up in the Bahamas or Cuba and become reproductive there. A few could also end up along the
Texas & Louisiana Gulf coast and become reproductive there in Nov.

There are no know winter cluster sites along the Gulf or Atlantic coast or in Florida although in rare cases small clusters have been seen Nov - early Jan.

Actually Dr. Urquhart said that there are many nomadic Monarchs that stay active along the coast states and spend the winter there and then head back north.
