They've been sighted at 13,000 ft. according to journey north.

Monarchs have been spotted by commercial pilots, when flying 10,000 to 13,000 feet high

How high can they fly?

Many years ago I took a real hot air balloon ride and we were at about 1800 feet and a monarch was flying above us. I thought it odd since it was November and the migration shoulda been over for our area.

I saw a Monarch in early November on Hawk Mountain in PA. It was using the updraft to fly over the mountain range. In the parking lot it was only 37 degrees. I was freezing my butt off on the rocks--must have been lower than 37 up there. We were hawk watching.

At some of the higher elevations, the temperature is warmer. I know when I was doing that hot air balloon trip, it was freezing on the ground, but up at 1800 feet it was actually pretty warm.

This one flew just a few yards above out heads, so it was probably freezing its butt off, too. I'm thinking that it warmed up some place else and was able to lock its wings and get started gliding. Then, it was able to use the updraft and didn't have to worry about flapping.
