Pollinator Plants

Postby Mona Miller » Tue Jul 28, 2009 9:33 pm

My fennel is in bloom and it is covered with bees and wasp. I usually don't let it bloom because the wasp come for the nectar and the caterpillars, but right now there are no caterpillars or eggs on the fennel. I am amazed at how many are nectaring--it is buzzing.

Other good plants in my garden are the mints, blue vervain, and clover.

The pollinators need our help also.

I'd say I'm getting lots of bees around my Apple mint.

Was looking this evening and I must of had 3 or 4 types of bees.

The bumble & carpenter bees seemed to be attracted to my penta plants.

I'm going to have to find time to weed but I'll have to watch out for bees.

Seemed to be lots of wasps and dragonflies also.

Saw one Monarch butterfly this evening and she was visiting my milkweed plants. She didn't seem to be laying eggs, just getting nectar.

Did not see any hummingbirds this evening, but did not get to look just before dark when they will be there. One of my hummingbird feeds was almost empty. Doesn't seem to be dripping, so I'm surprised that maybe I've had that many hummers visit. I think that I say/heard at least 2 this morning.
