Brown spots on bottoms of milkweed leaves

Postby texas butterfly » Tue Jun 30, 2009 9:21 pm

I've got several plants getting brown spots on the bottom of the leaves.

Is it the heat? Too dry? Over watering?

Is it just that these leaves are older?

The garden center is having same issue with their milkweed plants.

I think it is a combination of all the things you wrote. I also am having some brown spotting on my tropical. I tried to remove some of the leaves.

I think the problem may be fungal. Water from the bottom, not the top.

I'm pretty much watering from the bottom.

We've had ZERO rain and are close to drought conditions.

I'll have to try to look at the leaves under a microscope. That could be cool.

Could it be a lack of nutrients in the soil?

What is the best thing to fertilize with?

I've been using Miracle Gro Bloom Booster:

I've also used Osmocote:

The potting soil I used has soil moist and fertilizer:

Buy the one that has the ability to capture water.

I also add Soil Moist to the middle of my pots. Add just a pinch, they expand as they capture water and then will release it to the plants.

The brown spots under the microscope look nasty.

Yuk.....

Looks like disease and decay.

Contact your extension agent, they can help you determine exactly what is going on.

I searched on google for "texas, cooperative extension agent, houston"

The extension agents in many states can help with pests problems. Once they give you the information, you can decide how to act to treat the problem. Some may recommend pesticides, etc. Each person has to choose the path they follow. Choosing pesticides can have an affect on you, too and our world.
