Shade

Does anyone have milkweeds growing in part sun / part shade? I have a great place on the west side of my house that only gets 4 (ish) hours of sun a day. The Joe Pye Weed I put there is thriving - I even see evidence of what will become the blossoms. I have the MW seed kit - are there any that would accept such a small amount of sun? They say on the seed packages "sunny location", but has anyone found that they will tolerate less?

Common milkweed can take a decent amount of shade as long as it gets sun in the afternoon. I have a small patch that only gets sun in the early morning and then again in late afternoon. The only thing is that shade grown plants don't spread like they normally do when grown in sunny spots. Ironically enough, the monarchs (at least mine do) seem to prefer laying their eggs on those plants that get east / west sun versus the other patches that get south sun.

In VA, 4 hours of morning sun is considered full sun.
