They have arrived in Northeast Ohio finally

Postby butterflylover » Thu Jul 21, 2005 9:04 pm

I didn't think they were ever going to show up here as we have been having a very dry summer thus far. But finally on July 19th I found some eggs on my common milkweed. And ever since then I have been finding eggs like crazy. My goal was to find more than last year, which was 87 total. I am already to 85 in just eggs alone. I have found 13 cats. So if all 85 eggs hatch. Whooweee! And It isn't even August yet! Look out records! :D I am sooooo excited about having them back again! Butterflylover

Goals surpassed double

Postby butterflylover » Mon Aug 15, 2005 9:11 pm

I am now up to 101 cats hatched from eggs and 145 cats that I have found on the common Milkweed. All of these I have found just in my own Milkweed patch. 246 cats total so far. over 70 butterflies have hatched so far and 35 of those in one day alone. AT times it takes me well over and hour or better to do all the chores, but it is a fun hobby. It can be a challenge to accomplish other tasks during the day as my 3 kids keep me busy also. But they have learned how to find them now too. I will be letting the school teachers have some here real soon.

Are you starting to see a slow down? I haven't seen an egg or baby in some time. I have 4 babies left, the rest are close to pulpating. It should start really cooling down here soon and i'm worried about the babies. They won't be butterflies until October. I just hope it's warm enough for them to go on.

finding eggs

Postby butterflylover » Mon Sep 12, 2005 9:48 pm

My Milkweed is beginning to look really sick here now, It is hard to find a nice looking leaf to feed them. I counted 25 cats left today. Well over 50 chrysalides to hatch yet. I have not found any eggs lately, but did find a baby cat today. first one in about three days now. Season is wrapping up here I do believe. I have hatched 250 butterflies total as of today. It has been an amazing summer. 8) I have found 368 cats total this summer and have only lost 14 of them mysteriously. And only 1 butterfly. Not a bad percentage. I guess I won't make 400 after all. But I sure broke last years record of only 87 cats. Butterflylover
