Milkweed seeds for those who want them

Postby Bunny Jo » Thu Jan 01, 2009 4:16 pm

I have several hundred milkweed seeds that I have harvested from my plants as the pods have opened if anyone would like for me to send them to you. I DO NOT use any kinds of sprays on the plants so the seeds are pure and safe. I planted several dozen in organic soil and have just transferred the plants to my garden. Here in Florida, we can do this at almost anytime without worry of snow, ice or freezing. :D

Which species of milkweed are they? I'm restoring about 15 of my 147 acres in SE Indiana to warm season grasses and wildflowers. The tropical milkweed won't survive the winters here. Thanks! Chrys

I would love as many as you could spare! I have a potted milkweed in the house that is doing so well and I love, but it would be nice to plant a whole lot outside in my garden this spring. I live in Georgia too, so it shouldn't be too far.

My seeds are the Scarlet Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica). If this particular variety will work in your area, let me know.

Chrys - I see you are in southern Indiana. Your weather may be similar to mine in St. Louis County, Missouri. Asclepsias Curissavica is an annual here in St. Louis - it will not survive winter weather. As. Incanarta and As. tuberosa are two that will survive year to year where I am. I have to plant new As. Curissavica each May & I do so because it is a beautiful milkweed & the monarchs love it. I will be enlarging my garden this spring and am researching what other milkweeds might be perennials here in St. Louis. I think you need to research what milkweeds are native to your area. You might try find a butterfly garden expert at a local nursery or find a website pertaining to native plants for southern Indiana. God luck!

Right, the tropical or scarlet milkweed has to be replanted each year or planted in pots and taken into a warm area. Bunny Jo is going to send me some of the seeds; one of the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) guys in Indiana raves about it for monarchs. Butterfly weed (as. tuberosa) is already growing on the property, though I'll probably add more. And the common milkweed (as. syriaca) is in short supply there, so I'm planning to get some of its seed, mix it with damp sand & put it in the fridge/freezer for cold stratification, and hopefully get a bunch more of it going also. The swamp milkweed (as. incarnata) may do well near the pond & lower areas near the creeks. Thanks!

I would love as many as you can spare. I just tonight joined this forum and I don't know how to contact you privately to exchange addresses! :? I'm a pretty quick learner, so I'll get things figured out soon I hope!

Thanks for your offer!

Sherrie
