Monarch Sightings

Postby Pixie » Sun Sep 28, 2008 5:09 pm

I am surprised that there has been very few postings from the Midwest. I am in St. Louis, MO and would love to hear from other Waystation participants in my area. I had many cats this year, the first time in about 4 years. However, many did not make it - I would find them in J formation & the next day they would be black. I did bring 2 chrysalis' inside & hung them in a small aquarium - one emerged last week & I think the second will emerge this week. I have one outside on the milkweed covered with a sleeve - hopefully it will emerge in the next several days. There was a monarch out on the milkweed today, however I was unable to catch it to tag it. Our day temps are still in the low 80's, so there are still some monarchs in the area. Hope to hear from some other Midwest people.

Both of my remaining chrysalis' enclosed today - the one inside was a beautiful male, perfectly formed - he emerged about 12:45pm. After his wings dried, I tagged him & placed him outside on the milkweed flowers. The one outside enclosed at 5:30pm - another beautiful male. I tagged him also but he was still on the milkweed at 7pm - it is getting dark, so I don't know if he will be able to fly off this eve. I will check in the morning................
