LATE LATE LATE

Postby Debbie in Northwestern On » Thu Sep 04, 2008 1:12 pm

Here in Northwestern Ontario, I gave up on looking for monarchs back in July. However yesterday I discovered 4 cats in my yard. These perhaps are second-generation?? In previous years they are all hatched and gone by now. These still have to go into Chrys. ...wonder if they'll make it. It is good to see them. Perhaps we're in for a warm Fall.

I have been out tagging for the last three days. Have tagged 75. The Monarchs are few and the ones sighted have been skitish. No intensive nectaring yet. The East winds have just gently blown them overhead. Three days of rain for the weekend and NW winds Monday may change things. Roosting maps of Journey North have noted roosts in Wisconson, Iowa, and Illinois which is west of here but not much to the south across Lake Erie. Here's hoping a peak happens next week.

Found an afternoon roost of about 100 resting on old Queen Anne's Lace. Not nectaring, just resting.
Tagged 25, the rest soared up into the sky.
Noted approx. 350 from 1400-1500hr heading west along cliffs up from shoreline
The area is noted as Hawks Cliff, just east of Port Stanley on Lake Erie. Lat 42.667

On Thursday - nothing. No movement at Hawks Cliff. On Friday, over 500 Monarchs drifting on the 'thermals' from 12-00 - 1:00 moving east to west at Hawks Cliff, near Port Stanley, on the north shore of Lake Erie.

The migration is still happening in Southern Ontario.

Monarchs continue to move through Hawks Cliff, just east of Port Stanley on the north shore of Lake Erie. Several roosts of several hundred noted midday today.

They are still not out of Southwestern Ontario.

The hundreds, maybe thousands which passed by Hawks Cliff on Sept 17, 19, and 20th have not been reported at Point Pelee. Could they have prematurely crossed the lake at points east of Pelee??
