Ecotouring to see Monarchs in Mexico

Postby randreed » Sun Sep 07, 2008 10:27 am

Hello,

We are interested in traveling to Mexico to see the hibernating Monarchs. We understand that there are places that have horseback tours, and we think that would have the least impact to their environment, but we cannot find them on the web, and our travel agent is clueless.

Would someone please point us in the right direction?

Thanks,
Rand & Natalie

There are 4 butterfly colonies that are readily accessible to the public: El Rosario, Chincua, Cerro Pelon and Herrada. At all 4, there are parking lots below the colonies. At or near the parking lots is where you rent horses. However, at El Rosario (the largest butterfly colony) you must hike to the butterfly colony (1-3 miles and an elevation gain of 500-1,500 feet depending on where the butterflies happen to be clustering) because horses are not allowed.

The simplest way to see the butterflies is to drive into the little town of Angangeo and stop in front of the Hotel Don Bruno and there you will see trucks and drivers that will give you a ride to El Rosario or Chincua for about $30 per person + a tip for the driver. The driver will also show you where you can safely park your car.

Good information so far, but we will not be driving to Mexico, we will be Flying. Which airport is closest to Angangeo and how far is it? Is there public transportation (Train or bus) from the airport to Angangeo? Does the Hotel Don Bruno have a web site? Are there any other hotels nearby?

Thanks,
Rand

A small family run eco-tourism company called Rocamar Tours Ltd. offers a wonderful, competitively priced tour into the sanctuaries. They have been in business for 9 years. www.rocamar.com.mx or toll free 1-866-762-2627

You can fly into the airport in Morelia, Mexico City or Guadalajara. Transfer by coach to Angangeo. There are a number of good hotels. Go on your own or with the experts - either way this is a truly 'must see' incredible expereince! do not miss it!!!
