Volga SD - Brookings County

Postby Bigal_Monarch » Sat Aug 25, 2007 4:54 pm

The monarchs are starting to roost in a backyard maple tree. Typically there is 1-2 monarchs in the back yard today I counted 15 without looking in about 1 minute in the roost. Two juvenile ruby throated hummingbirds showed up yesterday and have been working the feeders hard all day. I will have to check what the monarch numbers are in the morning. I will be checking other known roosting sites in the area.

lots in Lenexa

Postby psi_chemie » Thu Oct 04, 2007 9:12 am

Yesterday I used the last of my tags. I had about 115 left, and did this easily in on a couple acres of clover in Lenexa, KS. There must have been a couple thousand monarchs dispersed throughout the field and in the trees.

I thought I wasn't going to be able to use the last of my tags, but it looks like there are still lots of monarchs passing through!

My photos demonstrate monarchs still breed in adundance in the Roundup Ready Crop growing regions of the Upper Midwest. The Journey North website also details many sightings of late summer monarch roosts in that region in Sept. 2007: http://www.learner.org/jnorth/maps/mona ... Roost.html

Monarch Roost Map

Postby crazycoot » Tue Jan 29, 2008 6:03 pm

I found the map
(http://www.learner.org/jnorth/maps/mona ... Roost.html)
refered to fairly interesting, as we had Monarchs here in NW Iowa (within 30 miles of the Minnesota border) on October 19 and 20th (2007).

According to the map the farthest north Monarchs were recorded at that time was northern Texas.

You can actually post your sightings to Journey North. I guess you can do that this Winter/Spring and then again in the fall.
