Great photos! Your so lucky to be able to see multiple monarchs at one time, i'm lucky if I see one a week!

Thanks so much! We've been cultivating all sorts of host plants in our yard for about the last decade. Some years are better than others. One year I found a single egg the entire summer, and never saw the female that left it for us.

Many monarchs

Postby JDSchlosser » Wed Oct 18, 2006 1:03 pm

I work at Newagen Seaside Inn in Southport Island Maine. We had as many as 200 monarchs here in September and today we have about 25. I hope to plant some gardens to attract and sustain even more. Rachel Carson wrote about the monarchs just before her death.

"But it occurred to me this afternoon, remembering, that it had been a happy spectacle, that we had felt no sadness when we spoke of the fact that there would be no return. And rightly—for when any living thing has come to the end of its life cycle we accept that end as natural.

For the Monarch, that cycle is measured in a known span of months. For ourselves, the measure is something else, the span of which we cannot know. But the thought is the same: when that intangible cycle has run its course it is a natural and not unhappy thing that a life comes to its end.

That is what those brightly fluttering bits of life taught me this morning. I found a deep happiness in it—so, I hope, may you.”

Amazing!
