8 tags left - anyone like them?

Postby Sandwhy » Tue Oct 02, 2007 7:19 am

Hi all - I have 8 tags left that I probably won't be able to use. If anyone further south would like them let me know!

You should really be able to use 8 more tags! I just tagged over 100 yesterday, there should still be a few passing through your area!

psi - well hell if I had 8 butterflies around I wouldn't have this dilemma now would I? ;) I'm also not in Kansas - I'm sure it's very different where you are.

The last monarch I saw in my yard was 9/20. The most I had in one day was 12 on 9/11. My yard is 1/4 acre - and most of that is the house - and that is where I do my tagging. Unfortunately I am unable to get out to prairie/parks to tag as my schedule does not allow!

Weather systems are also to be considered, of course... We've been having lovely warm weather here lately... but no monarchs. If a cold front pushes down we may indeed get a few more butterflies. I hope I do, but in the meantime if the tags can be used by someone else that would be lovely too!

That said, they're still up for grabs!

Sandy :)

PS, this peak migration map is from JourneyNorth - obviously a lot more monarchs being seen in eastern KS than the Chicago area at this time (bright red dots). I'm just sayin'...

I'm sorry, I was forgetting my geography for a minute. You are a lot further north! And it is really easy for me because I know a nice field where you can basically just walk around through maybe 1' high clover without bushwhacking and you can just get a monarch a minute with really no trouble :)

Still tagging in Maryland

Postby ButterflyLdy » Sun Oct 07, 2007 8:39 pm

I caught and tagged about 10 monarchs this weekend. I'm still seeing quite a few monarchs stopping in my yard in Westminster, MD. I think the weather is fooling them. My butterfly bush is still in bloom - I even have roses ready to bloom.

I'll still have plenty of tags left over as this year we had a lower number of monarchs overall in my area.

I released my last "raised" monarch today - tagged it and sent it on its way to Mexico. I'm hoping I still find some more monarchs while the weather is warm.

Another option is sending unused tags back to Monarch Watch so that they can write down who they are sending them out to. Helps with their record keeping. Monarch Watch will also know what is the best place to send them to because they also are keeping tabs on the migration.

Looks like you can figure out your peak migration dates by determining your latitude.

They provided this website to find out your latitude.

Hi Mona! I did find a lovely family down south to take the tags - with the instructions to send back any unused ones to MW as per their instructions. Can't remember how many they used - but got tons of photos in return. Priceless!

This was one of my helpers in 2006. Kids are fast learners.

Someone had donated a few tags so that we could do a tagging demo.
