Late Season Monarchs

Postby Wrinkledlight » Sun Oct 21, 2007 1:02 pm

I currently have 15 to 20 Monarch caterpillars on my milkweeds. I just learned about this site and the tagging kits. The shop says they are out of the tags. I was wondering if there was another site to order tags from or another way of getting some to try out. I am definitely going to be visiting this site more in 2008. Also, do Monarchs overwinter in Florida or will these late season ones migrate? Where do they usually migrate to when they are from East Central Florida?

They would go farther down the coast in the winter if the temperatures drop below 25 degrees. I just read a doctoral disseration about some actually crossing over the panhandle of Florida to Cuba and some of the other South American countries. They have not found that they remigrate from the South American countries when spring comes. The theory is that they become integrated into the local populations of those South American countries.

There are also theories of areas in Florida where they may be wintering over, but no significant over wintering colonies have been found.
