acquiring milkweed plants in south florida

Postby freda » Tue Aug 14, 2007 12:01 pm

I’m rereading most of the current posts, all my notes which I’ve cut’n’pasted from them this year, putting together my spreadsheet of timing and location for Monarch happenings and cycles and a new thought occurred to me: our season here in mid-Canada may be over, but we spend Dec-Jan-Feb in Estero, Florida! I’m now collecting all information pertinent to that area (between Ft Myers and Naples) looking for sources of milkweed. We’re in a ‘governed’ community so I don’t think they’re going to be excited about planting milkweed in our yard but we do have a friend with 220 acres nearby who will certainly let us get some plants started. All I have to do is FIND the milkweed in this area. Some contributors from the south recommended Scarlet Milkweed and Giant Milkweed. I can’t find either on the monarchwatch list of plants. Are these plants which I can go to Lowe’s and purchase? If I don’t have a response here, I’ll just sort it out when we arrive. How exciting…a second season!

Milkweed

Butterfly Weed - Asclepias tuberosa
is a very nice plant for the gardener looking for a more manicured look.
They may take 3-4 years to get to a decent size.

Also Asclepias incarnata is another perennial which stays in place
but does get taller.

Thanks! I'll make Lowe's and Home Depot first on my list when we arrive.
