Still finding cats!

Iwent to get some more milkweed down the road from where I live because it's getting in pretty short supply in my yard right about now, and ,lo and behold!, the milkweed patch was full of cats!! They were mostly 3rd and 4th instars.

That's great ! I hope that they are healthy... make sure you keep them in a separate area ..

I went to look at a milkweed patch a neighbor has and lo and behold! the town had decided that they needed to mow just that area by the roadside!@! However!! the milkweed that was left was full of bugs and tachnid flies so i am glad that i didn't move any plants to my yard and I will deal witih the few flys and bugs I have!!

I am buying a butterfly bush tomorrow and hope to have two new butterflies to use it!

im having a hard time finding cats ... most of the milkweed im finding is the red steamed

The cats I found were on both common milkweed and the red-stemmed variety.

I only recently read about the cats preferring the non-red-stemmed variety, just when I had collected a LOT of it to bring home, cut, in a pail. They've eaten it fine but another variety of milkweed with smaller leaves and white flowers has been totally ignored by the cats. Too bad, as it seems to last longer in water.



We've discovered the best way to preserve leaves until needed is to cover them with a wet paper towel and keep them in the refrigerator.
