Beta Testers: Prototype Logger Conversion

Postby Jim » Wed Jun 06, 2007 3:45 pm

To convert your prototype logger into a standard one all you'll need to do is remove the logger from the old orange shield using a length of wire, razor blade, etc. to "saw" through the adhesive foam, rub off the majority of the residue and then snap the logger into the empty keyfob you receive.

All kits have gone out so if you haven't received yours yet, you should soon.

got mine!

Postby Sandwhy » Thu Jun 07, 2007 10:38 am

Hi Jim,

Got my kit! and have three minor issues:

1) I had to use a USB port on the back of my Intel Mac, NOT a keyboard port. The OneViewer app would freeze up if I did the latter (this happened previously, but just wanted other Intel users to be aware!)

2) Is there an *easy* way to snap the old thermochron into the new fob? Because I haven't figured out how to yet!

3) I'm disappointed that there aren't decals/something on the white shield that explains what this is all about; I have many curious passers-by that are always interested in what's going on in my garden - unfortunately I'm not always around to answer questions. It seems that at least the monarchwatch website address or the groovy new MW logo could have been emblazoned on there.... I understand everything costs something though, so this probably was the last thing on everyone's mind.

Just my 3 cents. :)

Thanks for the help -

Sandy

PS,

I also assuming that installation is the same - on the NORTH side of a post/fence/etc near milkweed.

Thanks!!

Sandy :)

New Logger location logistics

Postby Judy Molnar » Thu Jun 28, 2007 12:00 pm

Jim

It's been a busy school year and summer already! Today is the first chance I've had to set up the new thermochrons and retrieve the old one.

Our first logger was placed on a sign post in the milkweed bed of our Children's Learning Garden in a discrete place that kids could not mess with. I've retrieved the data and snapped the logger into the new fob [it DID take a little work!], ready to set up the new mission. But it just dawned on me, where to put the second logger?

I'm assuming you want both loggers to be near each other, near the milkweeds and the only difference to be in their height placement. The original signpost is not tall enough to place the second logger at the height requested.

There are only 2 structures in the garden right now that have the height we need.

Option 1: the garden shed is about 5 feet from the original logger location on the signpost. We can place both loggers on the north side of the shed which is facing the milkweed bed. This would help continuity of data if that was important.

Option 2: There is a wooden trellis 15 feet away from the milkweed bed. Plenty of height but it may be regularly visited by kids during summer classes as they explore the climbing plants growing on it. The kids would be supervised by staff, but still you never know.

Option 3: Make a new, separate, free standing post, place it next to the garden sign in the middle of the milkweed bed and dedicate it to both loggers. I'd have to find such a post, then get it approved and installed, which will delay data taking for the time being.

Which of these 3 options are the best from your standpoint? I need to know soon before taking leave next week! [I will be working on Sunday]

A single post within the habitat would be preferred. However, if that is not feasible, you'll want to keep the plant height logger within the habitat and place the other logger as close as you can and at the proper height (on the shed?).

Jim
Thanks for the quick reply! I'll recruit some help to get a post and if not do the sign + shed deal.
