Taggging Stats

Yesterday, 66 monarchs in an hour and a half (9/22/06) tagged. Today, (9/23/06) I tagged 116 monarchs in 2 and a half hours. I was able to finger-net about 75% of these today because it was breezy, which kept the monarchs distracted holding on to flowers in the wind. It was great fun!

Yesterday, we had the same! Not as great a number/hour, but we thought we were doing great! Catching, tagging and releasing 80 Monarchs in two hours!
They all seemed to be heading south, too! When I would release the tagged Monarch, they mostly headed south. And the breeze was from that direction!
Yes, it was FUN!!!

Hi psi,
Just curious, how many tags are ya doing this year? Up on the north shore of Lake Erie, I managed 200 for my season, and hope for 250 next year.

This year and last, I managed 300 tags! Will try for more next year - maybe!!

When you hold a newly eclosed Monarch, then hold one from the wild, isn't there a BIG difference in the strength of the wild ones! Just hope my newbies get that "stiff" feel when they take off.

Now that the "season" is about to an end, I just can't wait till next year!!!

Dplex- I got 400 this year. I did 200 last year, easily. I thought I would have trouble with the 400 this year because it seemed to start off slow and I had to find a new tagging spot due to my field being mowed and not getting rain. When I did find a new spot, it was easy to use all the tags. I saved one sheet for monarchs I have yet to emerge.

Next year just to be a little more mellow I may drop back to 200.

JBowers- Yes the reared ones do get much stronger because I have found newly emerged wild monarchs before and they are soft and weak just like what you are used to. Although-- some of the wild caught ones are extremely strong and huge. I have never reared any that are as big and hairy as some I have caught wild.

I too had great success this year. I found the perfect tagging location and used 25 tags in 3 hours. Fortunately, the location is a county drainage control area so it won't be developed as the previous locations I used were. I tagged my first Monarch of the year less than a min after I arrived. I'll step it up a notch or 2 next year if the season is like this year.
I hope is is a mild winter in Mexico.

Here is an estimate of the number of Mexico recoveries this year. We hope to have it online for you to view very soon! Monarch Watch recovered 529 tags in Mexico. Plus around 15 from other Monarch Watchers who visited the reserves this year.

Is that just how many were found or is that all you could buy because of funding? If it's a funding issue and there are more tags down there we need to figure out a way to get you guys some money

Maybe i am a bit late, but: do you know how many tags were sold last year? (or how many tags informations have you receive_how many butterflies has been tagged?)
