2006 tagging

Postby Orangeaid » Sun Aug 27, 2006 7:17 am

Has everyone started tagging yet ? I have tagged 100 so far and just received 300 more tags. I have about 100 chrysalis hanging and should be very busy tagging until October. I always get a little excited when september rolls around. From what iam hearing the migration should be special this year.Lets keep our fingers crossed. Good luck to all taggers and enjoy

I'm in central Ohio and I plan on starting my tagging later this week. I put together a chart to see when most monarchs make it from Ohio and it seems to be mainly in september. Some do from late august but my focus is going to be next month :)

I'm going to start with the chrysalises due to eclose tomorrow. I've seen a few wild ones flitting about, but haven't got the knack of knetting them (yet!)

Tagging in Baltimore

Postby dichatham » Wed Sep 06, 2006 2:25 pm

Hi,
This is my first year for tagging. I only bought 25 tags. I have now tagged 5 and will be releasing them tomorrow. I have about 10 more chrysalis' to go. I haven't found any cats in over a week. I think this is the end of them for me. Seems like the season was very short this year. This is only my second year for collecting and raising Monarchs so I'm pretty happy for getting this many. Hopefully next year I'll have more than this year.

Looks like a bumper crop in Western Massachusetts this year. We have about 50 chrysalises and about 80 cats in my classroom at this time. Many more cats in the fields with students bringing in more each day. A very exciting time of the year for all of my first graders and me. Looking forward to our first tag and release day.

Tagging in lower Michigan

Postby Joyann856 » Sun Sep 10, 2006 11:45 am

Today is September 10, 06 and for my area (Adrian, MI 41.9076 lat 84.0644 long) the tagging of wild monarchs is very slow. By this day last year we had tagged a total of 275 and ran out of tags, wishing we had purchased more tags there were so many.

This year so far we have tagged 6 wilds, and not for lack of walking the goldenrod fields here, they just are not coming through. Those that are; are flying in a direct westerly pattern.
We seem to have went right into Fall with temperatures here and forecasts calling for upper 60s and overcast. I am hoping it is just that weather that has slowed migration, and the monarchs north of here are waiting for the nice 80 degree days with sunshine!

I have released aprrox. 60 reared monarchs, have 4 in chysalis stage and 14 in last instar.

Happy Tagging to All!

Not tagging to many wild Monarchs at this point in southern NJ but iam having fun tagging the reared cats at this point. Sept 9 06 30 monarchs emerged with 27 successfully tagged and today sept 10 06 28 emerged with 26 tagged. Lets hope the migration of the wild population picks up a bit soon !
