Growing milkweed indoors

Postby Farfalla » Wed Aug 30, 2006 6:02 pm

Would there be a way to grow milkweed indoors all winter long? (I live in NJ) It would be nice for the children in my class and I to nurture milkweed while we wait for the Monarchs to return.

I have grown the tropical milkweed in a sunny, south facing window through the winter. It gets a little tall for growing under lights.

It looks like Monarch Watch does grow milkweed indoors and maintain a year-round population.

I have kept tropical milkweed for 4 years, the same plant that is! It comes inside during late fall, winter, and early spring, then outside the rest of the year. I keep it by a sunny window, and water it less, it usually grows tall and grows new stems too, but usually no flowers or seed pods.

That's good news, because I finally got some tropicals going in a big pot!

Thanks, guys! Then I am going to try to cultivate one of those milkweed vines, too.! Caring for the plants through the winter will help keep the memory of the butterflies alive for the little ones in my class.
