Fuzzy caterpillar competition

Postby Leaflight » Mon Aug 14, 2006 2:27 pm

I have heavy milkweed competition going in my milkweed patch.
A fuzzy black and orange caterpillar is competing in eating all the milkweed leaves with my dozen Monarch caterpillars.
Should I remove them??
I can send a photo. :?

Tussock moth caterpillars (Euchaetes egle):

More here:

The adult is a predominantly gray moth with a bit of that yellow/orange on the abdomen.

These are voracious little caterpillars...if you don't have enough milkweed someone's got to be relocated :cheesy:

I found your caterpillar at monarchwatch.org... it is described as

Tussock Moth - Feeding by these hairy caterpillars is extreme. Large numbers of caterpillars are commonly found on a single plant which they completely defoliate.

So I guess relocate them to a place where you aren't wanting Monarchs I guess!

Good luck
