A front page story of the Lincoln Journal Star Monday 9/20/04 reports that a University of Nebraska entomologist has cracked the case. "Winds are blowing the little buggers (Pyemotes) from oak trees where they've been feeding on gall gnat larvae." The tiny (microscopic says the newspaper) and nearly transparent mites are blown from the trees. If they land on you, they'll take a bite. The newspaper recommends staying indoors for the next 10 days, and lacking that, shower with hot water and use lots of soap before going to bed.
