Bananas, Beer, and Molasses = Butterfly Bait

Yesterday, I mixed up a batch of butterfly bait--mashed over ripe bananas, dark beer (I used Guinness), and molasses. I put this out on a hanging tray. I checked the bait by binoculars from inside at 2:30 PM. There was a butterfly eating the bait. I quietly went out for a closer look. It was a very nice Question Mark. Our temps in the mid 60s.

Wow, this sounds like a college dare. I'll have to try this (for the buttrflies) out of curiosity. I'll have to use maple syrup instead, and I hope they like Sam Adams. I heard (from this site?) that you could actually use pumpkin to feed the caterpillars in a pinch, but only in their later stage of development. Have to keep that as an option.

An easier butterfly bait that I have found is to take one of those small applesauce cup and place that on a try. It works, too. But, flies, bees, and wasp love the applesauce, too.

I tried that a couple years ago and the raccoon found it. Guess it's tasty to all critters!

I put mine into a hanging saucer and then hung that up on a metal sheppards hook. I greased the hook with vaseline to keep the critters from climbing up.
