A Blue Monarch?

Postby Keith Petrosky » Wed Jun 15, 2005 11:40 pm

I was watching a show called "Buggin' With Ruud." The show took place in Papua, New Guinea and the guy was looking for butterflys. I was watching the show and I saw this butterfly that looked exactly like a monarch, but instead the orange color was replaced by an irridescent blue color. Was this a monarch, or a different species?

Keith,

It would be some sort of native danaid--close to a monarch, and maybe even same genus (Danaus), but far from the same thing.

Do you know it's name though and where I can find pictures of it?

Thanks to the monarch watch update, here is the butterfly I saw on that show, although in the update it says this butterfly lives in Southern Africa, and the show I was watching was filmed in Papua, New Guinea?
