Finally, eggs in Pittsburgh!

Postby Robin L. » Wed Jul 18, 2012 1:29 pm

I am elated to be able to say that I finally found my first eggs of the season yesterday at one of the spots I check a few miles from my home. Whew, I though it would never happen this year! There were 7 of them, and 6 have already hatched, so now I already have some little tiny babies to pamper. There were no signs of them at all up until this point, and this is a good 4-5 weeks later than normal for me. Now I have to hasten them along, as we go on vacation in less than 3 weeks. I've had to beg family and friends (former friends?) to take care of large numbers of them, in various stages of development, when we've gone away in the past which was difficult. So I'd like to get these guys into chrysalis form so that maybe my neighbor's kids can just release them when they eclose. I didn't even let my husband see that I'd brought some home to raise again, 'cause he might kill me! He's seen the trouble I had getting people to take them off my hands in the past.

What is it with husbands? Or should I say wives. Some of our spouses, just don't understand.

I know this is a little bit of trouble, but since it is your first sighting. Can you post it to Journey North?

Okay Mona, I did it. Their site was a bit of a pain to navigate, at least for me, but I think I finally got through it alright.

It gets easier once Journey North has your info and you have a password set up. There are a lot of worried people out there looking for their monarchs to show up. I keep telling them to keep an eye on Journey North for local sightings.

I also post sightings for hummingbirds.

Found my first caterpillar on my common milkweed, a rather large one. Lost sight of him, and it only took about a half hour......I walked away, came back and he was gone! Must be off making a chrysalis. But I did find a smaller one, about a half inch long. I am not seeing as many as I used too...I am thinking it may be the hot , 90 degree weather we were having.....or maybe it is just a little too early for my area. Hopefully more in a week or two!!

Finally!!!! Within the past week I have 10 eggs, a chrysalis, and two very small caterpillars. I have seen at least two monarchs hovering around the milkweed so I will give them a day or two of privacy then I will check again.......so excited!!!!!
