Will this butterfly emerge?

Postby Turtlehead » Thu Jun 14, 2012 8:32 am

I have a smaller than normal chrysalis that has been dark for 24 hours and the butterfly has not emerged. Has the butterfly died?

Thanks,

It can take longer for them to emerge, sometimes 2 days I'd read. Can you see the wing pattern?

Yes, I can see the wing pattern very clearly.

Do you have a clean spray bottle? Spray lightly with a mist of water. Some times that helps them to break free.

Thanks, Mona. I tried misting it and will see what happens.

This morning the butterfly still had not emerged. So, I opened the chrysalis and it was apparent that it had been dead awhile.

I wonder what happened?

So many things can happen. OE, bacteria, viruses a very long list.

I'm so sorry. It is really hard to care for a creature and then have it expire. :(

Make sure you disinfect every thing just in case.
