What's going on in the Mexican wintering areas???

Postby Nelson » Thu Mar 22, 2012 11:05 am

I'm not seeing any information on the blog or forum sites
as to what's going on this month in the monarch wintering
areas in Mexico...Are there MonarchWatch teams in those
areas collecting tags?...Just a little bit of information
would be greatly appreciated...Thanks...Nelson

There were tags collected by two of the participants of the Monarch Watch dplex-L email list. Debbie Jackson and Diane Pruden took a trip down to Mexico and purchased tags for Monarch Watch.

I'm perplexed Mona...One of the the tags listed above (NGB 861)
is a tag that I put on a Monarch on Sept. 19, "2010" ???
Additionally, what do the numbers to the left of each code
stand for?...Thanks!...Nelson

Numbers to the left are not relevant. Some times tags do not get bought the year they are found so the Mexican people will hold on to them until they can sell them to someone.

Monarch Watch has limited funding to buy back tags so they cannot purchase all the tags that are available.

You can make a tax deductible donation and specify that it is for buying back tags:

Evidently tags from the 2010 season are still being found - one of mine (NGB532), a monarch I tagged & released on 8/30/10 was just found this past February in Cerro Pelon Mexico - so exciting!!

Matter-of-fact, Monarch Watch does not have enough money to buy all the tags that are available. If you choose, you can donate for tag recoveries.
