Did you make sure the plant you offered is milkweed? Dogbane looks a lot like milkweed. Caterpillars will refuse to eat it.

Don't put your caterpillar in full sun especially in a glass container, it will be way too hot.

Some people take bridal veil (tulle) you can get at a fabric store and put that over the top. Sometimes you can put the tulle on the top of the container and then put the lid on to hold it in place.

I don't understand some of what you are writing. Monarch caterpillars will eat the sap of the milkweed. I have never known them to eat dogbane, which also has a milky sap.

The Monarchs will also lay their eggs on the leaves. 99.9% of the time they lay them on the underside of the leaves, usually near the middle vein.

The stripes will come when it is second instar. It has to molt first (change its outer skin).

Life cycle (this has pictures of the different molts). When they are molting they will be very still, don't move them. They will climb out of their old skin and then turn around and eat it. Then, let the old skin dry and start eating again.

Remember, they rest between instars. Eat, poop, grow, molt.
