Late sightings

Postby froglegs » Thu Oct 20, 2011 9:10 pm

Thought I would need to wait until next year to see my next Monarch, but saw three Sat.10/15 and one yesterday 10/19.
The last one was laying on its side in the street. Nasy windy, wet day here near Chicago, I assumed it got slammed by the weather. As I cupped it, I noted it was still alive--a vibrant, healthy-looking male.
Kept it overnight indoors on some cut butterfly bush flowers to see if it might recuperate but sadly it did not survive.
Wondering what the latest sightings are at this latitude? Four in a week suggests a late batch of catepillars finally maturing. Hoping to see more this weekend as the weather rebounds and any other late migrants head south.

There are several categories for Monarch Sightings; for example, fall roosts, peak migration, etc.

New late sighting! Had a gorgeous Monarch on my yellow butterfly bush today 10/22--watched for a few minutes before it headed south. Long way to go......

I'm N/W of Chicago, as well, and saw three over the weekend and one today. I'm not comfortable with this as I see no way they're going to make it that far South with such limited nectar now available. :(

Here in southeast Indiana, near Aurora, I saw 2 monarchs yesterday and 1 the day before. There are still asters blooming, so I hope those are enough to sustain them if it's not too late to make their journey. The weather this week has been beautifully clear, near 60 degrees. :-)

Again, here in SE Indiana near Aurora, I spotted a monarch yesterday, 11/8. It was unseasonably warm & sunny, in the low 70s. There was also a large, very brilliant one on Saturday, 11/5, when it was also sunny and in the mid 60s. A storm came through today, though it was still in the low 60s. Tomorrow night, it's supposed to be in the 20s, so I imagine those are the last ones for the season. It's the latest I've ever seen them.

Spotted another monarch on Saturday, 11/12, on my back hillside where little white asters are blooming. It was below freezing Thursday night, so it must have found a warm place for the night.

As long as they don't have too many nights below 25, they will make it.
