wing repair

Postby chanceychelsey » Sat Sep 10, 2011 10:18 am

I had a cat fall while going into chrysalis (didn't have a cremaster to hook in) and therefore had a severe flat spot which had an unwanted collection of cells on the side. I figured if it did emerge it would likely be deformed. She came out this morning and while one set of wings is perfect, the other side are both deformed.
Do I attempt a repair on both winds on her right side? I would have to take the deformed ones off very close to her body. I only have one set of wings to use, and I'm not even sure they will fit. I have to leave her for while as she's only been out for afew hours.

Suggestions?

Update...upon closer inspection, the deformed little girls good wing was really not so good after all. The pattern lines were not smooth and normal and the wings were rather small.
Poor girl has been euthanized.
On a happy note, another 10 monarchs tagged and released today!

Safe flight!

I was shocked to find a wooly bear caterpillar (Great Leopard Moth) in my tent eating a Monarch pupa. I've never seen any thing like this before. But, I've never seen so much rain at one time in this area either. Lee dumped, dumped rain--13 inches at the last count. Luckily, my pots of milkweed were tall enough so the caterpillars didn't drown.

I am so glad you have had more successes than failures. But, most of the time it isn't our fault. It just happens, we do the best we can to help them.
