saddened and angry

Postby NickiM » Sat Aug 13, 2011 6:30 pm

I went to my favorite milkweed "grocery store" this morning to look for cats and eggs. What had been a beautiful, healthy stand of common milkweed is now dead or dying. Some idiot had sprayed it with an herbicide--I refuse to use the words "weed killer", because there are no weeds, just plants that are where we don't want them to be.

I wouldn't have been able to feed all of my cats last year without this patch of milkweed, and I don't know where I'm going to get enough for all the cats I have this year. Plus, I found quite a few cats in this patch last year, and now one less place for a female to lay eggs.

Sorry to hear that. :( I've been trying to work with a gas line company to get them to mow later. Last year, it was a bit later. They promised to mow this field last this year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but will watch the field. I want to collect seeds again.

Nicki,

Is there a restored prairie near you where you can collect leaves?

This year the gas pipeline company mowed pathways so they could check the line and left most of the field unmowed. I highly recommend contacting companies, informing them of the importance of habitat, and asking for them to delay or leave part of the area unmowed.

Why can't people respect other peoples property. All they had to do was ask about and you could have told them not to destroy it. That's sick.
