First Monarch In Pennsylvania

When I was driving home from work today, I saw my first monarch of the year. I have never seen one this early. I am about 25 miles outside of Philadelphia.

Gwynne - I have 20 1st instars already! I've never had them this early! I collected the eggs from my backyard last Thursday. Oh my!

I was beginning to think I imagined that butterfly. I dont even know where there is any milkweed growning. Wow 20 first instars!

I'm down to 19 and there is a lot of molting going on at my house! =) The milkweed is growing like - well, a weed. I'm no longer worried about being able to keep up with my cats. Now I need to find a nectar plant for them. Nothing is blooming yet. At least I have a few weeks and the nurseries are getting in lots of stock.

I have plenty of blooming flowers. What I dont have is any milkweed. Do you have wild milkweed or did you buy it?

Most of it I bought 4-5 years ago from various places. The common milkweed I dug up from a friend's field. I'm down to 18 now - another little guy didn't survive. Everyone else is doing great and they are just growing like gangbusters! =)

13 of the "babies" eclosed this morning! It takes my breath away every time. 5 more to go. Hurray!

I released 3 adults on the 24th, 18 adults yesterday and 3 adults today. I still have about a dozen or so chrysalis's I am waiting on plus 3 caterpillars that are still pigging out.
