Is this MW normal?

Postby TypingMonkey » Sun Mar 13, 2011 11:57 pm

In my area it's been in the mid to low 70s for the last month or so. I notice that my Milkweed plants seem to droop everyday during the day. I assume they are thirsty so I water them, but only for 10 seconds, I find 5 seconds doesn't get the leaves complete out of their droopiness and 10 does, but either way, both times give me yellow leaves in the lower part of the plant.

Right now I have to water them everyday and I heard that yellow leaves means too much moisture in the ground, but I water them anyhow because the plant leaves droop. Is my Milkweed acting normal? Am I going to have to water my milkweed plants, which are Mexican Milkweed and about 2 feet tall, everyday?

I got these 2 plants, 2 weeks ago from a nursery if that helps any.

You should not be watering every day. The leaves will look droopy because that is how the plant responds to the heat, but don't water it every day. This is why the leaves are yellowing and dropping. It is drowning. Are these in pots are in the ground?

You could try mulching them so it doesn't lose water. Tropical milkweed is supposed to be drought tolerant.

Yes these are in a bed on the ground, but I don't know the soil used in it, since it was there before I planted the milkweeds in.

It just recently rained and the leaves are really straight and it's blooming, but those yellow leaves around the bottom have developed as well.

How do I know when to water them again? Is there a finger test on the ground I should be doing or?

The best thing to do is to try to water once a week and let it soak. Don't let water get on the leaves, water the ground.

Foliage discoloration and stunted plants can easily be caused by soil that is too wet and drains poorly or soil that is too compacted for good root growth.
also magnesium Mg or lack thereof can cause slow growth and leaves turn pale yellow, sometimes just on the outer edges. New growth may be yellow with dark spots.
Try adding some miracle grow time release fertilizer.

ps just because you see them pop back up when watered isnt necessarily the water effect but the fact that the new water is oxygenated, so your plants can breath again for awhile and pop up but when this is depleted they sag again, i grow Milkweeds hydroponically and if the air pump doesnt come on the plants sag but pop back up when the air is returned..make sure you have good drainage!!!!
