Help please...adult just emerged

Postby cannie » Sat Nov 13, 2010 3:11 pm

i just had my very first experience with ALMOST seeing an adult emerge. i think i was just about 5 minutes late. anyway, it's been about an hour, and it's still hanging there doing whatever it is they do to get situated to their new life. however, something just came out of it and landed on the paper towel underneath it. it's like a reddish splotch but it doesn't look wet, like blood.

is there something wrong with the butterfly?

(also, if the other caterpillar pupated about 24 hours after the first one, will it also emerge 24 hours after the first one? 'cos it looks like it could emerge any minute now... the chrysalis is becoming more transparent all the time.)

Relax, it is the waste product from them being in a chrysalis for 10 days. After the wings are inflated with the fluids, the excess is discharged, usually reddish brown.

Sexing Monarchs

The males have to dots in the middle of a vein on the hing wing. There's a picture on the website that I posted above. Females have wider veining on the upper wings.
