Still got caterpillars?

Postby Judy Molnar » Tue Oct 19, 2010 1:47 pm

Howdy!
Just curious, I'm in Newport News VA [Waystation #299] and I'm on my last caterpillar, which I expect to turn into a chrysalis either today or tomorrow. Anyone else out there with late ones? It'll be November by the time I release this one. It was one of three 1st instars found in our Children's Learning Garden on October 5th and 6th.

A friend in Vienna, VA still has caterpillars and pupae. Do you have heavy frost in Newport News? If you don't, then they will be fine.

I still have a few dozen cats, but they were purchased and shipped to me. Now I did find a single egg close to hatching on a young milkweed plant in the garden a couple days ago, but it hasn't hatched. I think the cold/wet spell last week killed it as it should have hatched by now.

Yes, I have one I found last weekend as 4th instar, making silk pad today. I live in Michigan, 40 miles north of Detroit. Weather has been great up till now. Who knows what'll be like when by the time it's ready. I also found my first black swallowtail cats the same day. At least they don't have to worry about the weather since they will spend the winter in the garage.
