Yesterday morning, despite an overnight heavy rain, my buddy was alive and well, still nectaring in the garden. I was elated to see that he was flying -- he was on the other side of the house from where I'd seen him winging around the day before. BUT I was concerned that he was STILL here and had not flown away.
He has the official tag on the one hindwing. He had -- luckily -- lost the wingtip of the forewing on the OTHER side. I dabbed the edge of the torn off piece in a line of Superglue and glued it on, overlapping the edges, then used 2 orange tags on both sides to strengthen the wingrib, and 1 more white "do not use" tag to mend a ragged hole in the middle where the torn off piece met the rest of the wing.
As I said, he's flying, caught up to a female (reared/tagged but otherwise whole -- maybe not as skilled flyer as a wild female) to mate with
