What happened to the "light" monarch caterpillar, did it come out differently?

By the time the "light" caterpillar was a 5th instar, it looked just like the rest. It emerged as a normal coloured monarch.

I really enjoyed your photojournal.
I'm especially fascinated by your iron work chrysalis holder. What a neat apparatus.
Is the yarn to separate groups by age or date of pupation?
Do you use fabric netting or plastic screening?
I'm full of questions- because I'm always interested in what others are doing... and don't want to reinvent the wheel.
You are obviously successful with your methods.

What the chrysalides are hanging on is a pie/plate rack. Works great & I can comfortably accomodate about 50 chrysalides. With those that are ready to emerge, I push apart the others to make room, so the newbies are not crowded. If I have numerous on one day, I transfer some to the top handle.

The coloured thread I use is to separate who pupated on any given day. Most emerge on the same day but occassionally I'll have one that is a day early or a day later. Interesting when this happens.

The fabric I use to cover the rack is bridal netting. The same fabric I use to cover my containers.

Really nice photo album! What kind of camera do you use? I can't seem to get clear pictures of my cats in the first instar stages. I'm thinking my camera settings need to be adjusted.
I'd like to get better at my butterfly raising photography.

Love your pictures. Can I ask how come all the chrysalises are attached to long strings? Did you do that yourself? If yes, how?

Louise and Rebecca...BOTH great slide shows! I loved your photos and the way you put them together, each of you using a different program... I did one using Picasa but it doesn't have the graphics and visual appeal that both of yours do. Thanks for sharing with the forum!
