LAST OF MY BUTTER'S

Postby tartandtiny » Mon Sep 20, 2010 9:24 am

We released the last of our butterflies this weekend. In total 58 - 24 girls and 34 boys. All strong healthy flyers. Last year I had a lot that could not fly.

It is sad to see an end of another year.

Does anyone know if temperature has anything to do with weather the caterpillar hatches as a boy or girl. It seems as though the cat's reared in a warmer temperature turned out to be female and the room that was a bit cooler produced more males.

That's interesting. I've never noted that. We are told that it is 50/50. It may seem uneven from person to person, but in general that is that data.

Of my tagged so far, it is 213 males and 235 females. It's hard to keep track of the untagged ones. A lot of them fly out of the enclosure before I can catch them to identify. About 180 in process in my 75 degree greenhouse to "rush them along".

Of the 39 I reared, 22 were female and 17 male, pretty much a mix
