My first chrysalis to euthanize

Postby Schmetterling » Tue Sep 07, 2010 12:10 pm

Sadly I have a chrysalis that didn't form fully. Now it looks like little black or brown dots. Guess I need to euthanize and I understand to put it in a ziplock baggie and put in the freezer, then dispose. Embarrassed to say that I am a little squeamish to put this in my freezer with my food. Guess after my first one I'll get over it. How long in the freezer and then right into the trash? I've done so much reading, can' t wait till I am much more knowledgeable. Even with all the reading, when problems arise I just like to know that I am doing the right thing. Thanks to you who answer!!

If you think it is already dead, then put into the zip lock bag and throw it in the trash. My husband knows that there is one place that I put them and to watch out for them. I don't like to think of any thing half alive and throwing it away--that is why I freeze them first.

No I am not sure that it is dead. Maybe I will wait a bit.

This chrysalis enclosed today. Had one crumpled wing too short to trim, and upon a closer look there was a dead bug of some sort right on the effected part. It had a split skin as in the pictures on the post" split skin chrysalis." Now my question, Is freezing the best way of euthanizing. It will never fly. I saw the video on wing repair but even if I hAd an extra wing don't think that'll work.

I'd freeze it. It is difficult, but watching it struggle is even more difficult. A smooth transition is frig. then freezer. Sorry. :(

Did put this one in the freezer. I saw the you tube video on wing repair. This one could have used help like that, poor thing all it needed is a little more wing.

I actually save wings from Monarchs that I find dead out in the garden. Never know when one will come in handy.
