Caterpillar host plant database, you can put the plant or butterfly in and get what plants it uses. Must use latin names. If it doesn't come up with complete name listed, just take a few letters off the end and keep searching.

This is the garden forum, butterflies. People from all over even some foreign locations. You can post pictures for identication, too. I like trying to see if I can identify what people post.

Two more, which we use for all kinds of bugs, not just butterflies.

http://www.whatsthatbug.com This one is a lot of fun. Not very easy to use just for an ID, but you can submit a photo and hope they post it or reply. They've posted a couple of our photos, including a couple I took last year of a monarch caterpillar forming its chrysalis.

http://www.bugguide.net If you can't find an ID for the butterfly or other insect you have, you can submit a photo in the ID section and other users will respond.

There are also insect ID groups on flickr.

Wow! I didn't see your post. This is great. I knew about the two you mentioned, but not about Flickr.

I just searched on "insect identification":

Pages of groups. I wish I had more time.
