I am a new watcher maybe about a month or two and I just had four healthy monarch butterfly hatch. That was the coolest thing i have seen. I even got it on video of one coming out and pumping up it's wings. I now have three more cats and eggs inside to raise and a dozen or so outside. It is amazing how fast they multiply i had to go to home depot for more milkweed today.I also have seen some black swallowtail cats in backyard. I was told all you have to dois plant the plants and they will come; and they were right. thanks everybody for all the info.this site has helped me greatly to get started. wish me luck.

A caterpillar found on milkweed which has 3 pairs of antenna or feelers is probably a Queen, which is closely related to the Monarch. Does it look like this link?

I am also a new Monarch watcher (since Aug 2005). You're correct, this is the coolest thing to see. Some of my friends thought I was crazy but now they all come to see what phase in the life cycle we are. I can't wait to share next week with them. I should have about 20 hatching within a day or two. Enjoy your new adventure. Can't wait until next year! How about you?

You were very right Tee. We had about 20 people show up for the "releasing" but only 15 butterflies to release. We had a fabulous time. Got great pictures. My neighbor, Savannah, had her birthday today (she's the one who only wanted cats for her birthday). She released our first "hatchling". She was so excited. She wants to take a chrysalis home. Sound like anybody you know?
