Set up for using Glad Containers to Rear

Postby Mona Miller » Mon Aug 09, 2010 10:42 pm

Okay you ask for it. I finally had a few seconds to take pictures.

Image
Container with cup in the middle.

Image
Put the paper towel over the cup, lean milkweed on the mound that the cup makes. This helps the frass roll down out of the way a bit.

Image
Don't forget to put the top back on and make sure it is secure.

Image
I put holes in the top with a corn holder to let out humidity and let in a bit of air.

When finished I stack them up to save room.

I don't wash them until the cycle is done for that crew. The new paper towel gives them a clean surface after I carefully lift it out and dispose of the stems, frass, and dirty paper towel.

I clear out my dish washer, even taking out the silver ware tray. Turn off the drying cycle and I can load eight of the large containers in the dish washer with the lids. I end up putting the lid in the bottom since they are too tall to fit in the top. I load the lids vertically. After they have finished a normal cycle, I then repeat the rinse cycle.

I'm still battling flies in my tent, so I don't wait to raise too many in there. It's a bad fly year again.

Mona, when they are fifths, do you move them to net cages?

I wait for them to pupate on the top of the lid, and then I wait for the pupae to harden. After the pupae is hardened, I spray the pupae and carefully lift the silk (it comes off more easily when wet). Next, I take stick pins (with plastic tops) and stick the pin through the silk. Then, I pin them by weaving the stick pin through the net cage. I always leave the pointed end of the stick pin on the outside.
