Tag recoveries

When do they normally release the list of tag recoveries from the previous fall's migration?

Back around early February I heard, second hand, that the Monarch Watch Staff was going to cancel their annual trip to Mexico to retrieve tags because of the floods and storms down there. So if no one else purchased alot of Monarch Watch tags in Mexico last winter, there might not be many recoveries to report.

Does anyone know if Paul Cherubini is right about the Monarch Watch staff not going to Mexico? This is information that I would think would be on the front page of this web site right?

I would think so. Iam not tagging this year ( 2010 ) wtih the supposed current status of monarch populations i dont want to put any additional stress on them this year so i will be just rearing and releasing with out physicaly handling the monarchs this year.

Jim was just in the office and one of the points of discussion was how to inform everyone about the recoveries we have and the reasons we did not go to Mexico to buy tags this past winter.
The tag information will be posted soon. The explanation for why we didn't go to Mexico can be found in the BLOG - namely the 15 inches of hail and rain that devastated the monarch overwintering area in February. Major landslides killed about 50 people in Angangueo and El Rosario and the town was flooded beyond comprehension.
We are in the process of trying to work out a way to recover more of this year's tags before next season but it appears that will be difficult. We expect to recover most of the tags found this year some time next winter."

We are taking another tack. We have been raising cats all summer and have 37 head in various stages at this time. We had an ant and earwig problem last year that reduced our "production." This year, with the problems in Mexico, we have decided to raise and release as many Monarchs as possible to help build the local population and not just feed the ants. We will tag when the 2010 tags are available so, hopefully, the data will help understand the state of the Monarch's recovery after this past winter.

My location is east central Iowa. I have a home habitat in Lisbon, IA (www.gardnerbutterflyinn.com) and at Taft Middle School in Cedar Rapids, IA. Both are over 1000 square feet. We now have about 60 in our Monarch brood house. My wife gets the milkweed to feed the brood and keeps finding eggs.

Bill - I just visited your website - what a delight!! I am most interested to know if you participate in the Great Forest Park Balloon Race here in St. Louis, MO. It is held every year in September, drawing thousands of people to Forest Park for the Balloon Glow & the race. It is one of my favorite photographic events every year. I love the descriptions of your "rooms in the Inn" for the butterflies. How has your season been so far this year? Here in St. Louis I have only seen 2 monarchs, no eggs, no cats........My garden is ready & waiting so I just hope the southern migration will find my little garden oasis in the next 2-3 months.............

Thanks for visiting my "Inn" website, I wanted it to be fun and spoofy! You may also want to visit my other website www.wgharts.com, too, as it will describe my book "ABalloonC" a children's alphabet book based on hot air balloons. We haven't done the St. Louis balloon event as that is a very busy time for my son-in-law, both for ballooning and for his photography business. I just retired, but I haven't flown the balloon in a couple of years.

We now have over 60 head of Monarchs in our brood. They started in early June and haven't slowed down yet. Hopefully, we can send a few your way with the fall migration.
