First Monarch! Do I have enough milkweed!?

Postby applestar » Sat Jul 03, 2010 3:06 pm

I saw the first Monarch butterfly in our garden this year just a little while ago :cheesy:

:D Before I came inside to report, I was looking around my garden with a sinking feeling -- "I don't think I have enough milkweed!" -- and here I have 2 additional patches of common milkweed starting, as well as new A. purpurea and incarnata. A. tuberosa clumps are twice as big as last year, and I have a neat row of 1 gal pots of Silky Tropical Milkweed (A. curassavica) and Oscar's Milkweed (Gomphocarpus physocarpus) that I started from seed in spring (for the first time -- I thought they were NEVER going to grow big! Let me know if they need to be in bigger pots :-s ).... Plus I was given some Blue Vine Milkweed seeds, and the four baby vines -- only knee high so far -- are starting to twine and grow up their trelisses. These HAVE to be enough!

Hi Apple! I had to laugh because there is NEVER enough milkweed! As much as we have, I still end up at the local patch down the road towards the end of the summer. The trouble is, then I find more caterpillars/eggs and then I have to find more milkweed then I find more caterpillars/eggs. See what I mean? No...I'm afraid there will never be enough.
