Swallowtail Butterflies

Postby cliff4kelly » Thu May 20, 2010 8:12 am

A friend gave me a Dutchman’s Pipevine plant a couple of months ago. Now I have Swallowtail Cats! :D
I've searched high and low for a web site regarding Swallowtails with little success. I think I may have the Polydamas Swallowtail Cats and eggs. One went to chrysalis last night. How long will take before it emerges? The Swallowtail Cats are SO very different in their behavior, it is amazing!
I tried to upload a picture, but I'll have to go to the trouble shooting section of this site. LOL!
The Swallowtail Cats have a gold band near their head that makes me think they are the Polydamas.
Thanks for any information!

Note the egg color. Pipevine eggs are orange; Polydamus are yellow

I have only had swallowtails this year (except for my 7 Monarchs). I had a lot of dill, parsley, spicebush and citrus. So I have to say, once they pupate, some of them don't eclose until the following fall or spring. It's impossible to predict which ones will eclose soon and which ones won't. You end up saving them for a long time! BUT, without them I would not have many butterflys to raise, so I am enjoying them! I have Pipevine but no Polydamus yet.
