caterpillar ID please

Postby reggorf » Wed May 05, 2010 10:32 am

I was pruning the suckers of a cherry tree(with red/purple leaves) and I found a bunch of neon green cats. Most look to be 1st-3rd instar. They have small white stripes going down their sides from front to back. Any ideas? Sorry for the not so great pictures. The whole image is not being shown here and I am not sure why.

It may be a moth and not a butterfly.

There are 363 species of butterflies and moths that use cherry:

I put Prunus in the search. If you have the species name, you can narrow your search.

I think I may have found it. Maybe you could look at it and see if you agree. Go to google images and type in "copper underwing". Let me know what you think. I think the tree is prunus virginiana. Thanks mona. You always know where to find the answers.

I don't always know where to find stuff. I depend on Google to do searches. But, that data base for caterpillars is great.

I agree that is what the caterpillar looks like. I noted you were raising them. That you will give you a definite answer. :cheesy:
