MONARCHS FOUND IN BALTIMORE - OCT 31ST

Postby dichatham » Sat Oct 31, 2009 2:43 pm

Hi,
Help. I found 2 monarchs today, 1 on my butterfly bush and 1 on my swamp milkweed. It is dreary, damp in the 60s here today. They were hanging underneath the leaves. It will be getting dark here in aobut 1.5 hours. I picked one up and it flapped its wings and just "flew" to the ground. They both just let me pick them up off the bushes.

I put them in my shed in my butterfly house for the night. It is only going to be in the 50s tomorrow but sunny and dry.

Do they have a chance of making it further south if I let them go tomorrow? or is it too late and too cold?

Any advice would be appreciated. They look in good shape--not all tattered.

If it gets up to 50 and is sunny, they will be able to fly. I have two adults to release tomorrow and still 8 pupae. Hoping they get out soon so they can get on their way.

It's still raining here this morning. It was raining most of the night. It is supposed to clear up in the afternoon. But, just like Baltimore our temps are just supposed to go up to 50.

I will hand feed the Monarchs this morning with some gatorade.

Mona--Thanks so much. I knew you would know what to do. Same weather here in Baltimore. Yukky! I'll try to let them go tomorrow and will feed them today.

It was rainy all day here. I had 4 more Monarchs emerge. Now, I have 6 and am waiting for better weather. So far, no hard frost so there are plenty of nectar sources in the garden. 4 more Monarchs pupae to emerge.

It's so nice to hear about Monarchs still moving through. The last of my butterfly bush flowers died this past week and most of the other nectar sources as well. Hope you both have better weather tomorrow for flying.
