Identifying milkweed by pod?

Postby ButterflyLady_IL » Sun Sep 04, 2005 9:09 pm

The Milkweed photo section isn't helping me to identify the milkweed in the fields.
Does anyone have more information for me?
I have found plants with relatively smooth pods and then some with green spikes also. Most pods are starting to mature here in Western IL and I'm anxious to collect and further share seeds. But I want to be correct when sharing the seeds ID.
Any idea what varieties I have found?
They often grow right next to each other.....well very near each other.
The Photo section only describes or has photos of the leaves, and flowers.....
Thanks in advance.

Take a photo of it, upload it, and put it into your post here. :D

Sorry about that - it's on our long list of updates to the site. In the meantime, check out the following links:

I feel compelled to include an image so here's a close-up shot of pods of Asclepias syriaca (common milkweed):

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks Jim,
From the links to photos you provided, I see most of what I find must be Common Milkweed or Sullivant's Milkweed.
As the pods ripen... I'll be gathering with good knowledge.
