When does a Monarch become female/male?

At what point does a caterpillar become male/female?
Is it at the egg stage? X&Y chromosomes

Could temperature have an affect on this?

Seems that in my rearing tents sometimes it seems I have more of one sex.

I think that it is the egg. Caterpillars are male or female, I know that.
